These original, beautifully hand carved gourds (ipu) created by Kona artist, Winnie Logan, are a labor of love! It takes 6 months or more to grow the gourds from seed to maturity. Once mature, the timeframe for the decorating process (ipu pawehe aka the Ni’ihau method) itself is an average of 2 to 2.5 months from start to finish. After carving the design it takes 3-5 weeks for the coffee dyeing stage and then an additional 1-3 weeks for the drying stage (temperature, humidity, thickness, shape and size of the ipu are all factors). The final step is applying the coats of finish to the inside and outside of the ipu for an incredible finished masterpiece.
