Umīque LLC, Kye Harford (owner, artist, curator)
Honomū, Hawaiʻi
Established in 2020, Kye is a Japanese creator who first moved to Hawaiʻi to study at UH Hilo. He started on his path as a "seamster" when COVID hit the island and lost his previous job. Masks were the first thing he made as products, and has been slowly expanding his repertoire, which he currently regularly makes: tote bags, pouches, bucket hats, home decors and shirts.
The brand name "UMĪQUE" is a made-up word stemming from "unique"; "U" is for 'you', or whoever looks at the creation and "MĪ" is for 'me', so the name has a sense of meaning where this brand is nurtured by people that make connection with the brand. With the motto, "Responsive Creation," Kye creates fashionable items using upcycled materials as much as possible.
